Unity Food Garden

The Dream of the project founders is to unite people from all walks of life, by encouraging a self-sufficient lifestyle and caring for the earth. The project aims to create food security for community members of both Railton and Swellendam. Anybody who is interested in growing their own food can apply for a garden allotment area. Along with food security, the community gardens could become a source of permanent income for each family who maintains a plot. They wish to involve the local schools, churches and retirement homes in the hope of creating food security for everyone interested.

Unity Food Garden is a local Swellendam and Railton community initiative to create a garden for people living in the area where they can grow their own food in a healthy and sustainable way. It is also an opportunity for families to earn additional income. Unity Food Garden is a non-profit organization where members join hands and resources to ensure that this communal dream becomes reality. Ground was made available by a benevolent land owner with work commencing during August 2020. The land along Cooper Street in Swellendam is an excellent location for allotment-style, community gardens. Cooper Street is conveniently situated between Swellendam & Railton, making it the logical central meeting area which is easily accessible. The view of the mountain and surrounding landscape creates an attractive setting for the project.

There are a few vacant plots on Cooper Street and the group has started the initial project on the current available plot (Unity Food Garden headquarters). There is also potential for having food gardens on any vacant, arable land in Swellendam or Railton and they are hoping to partner with willing landowners to garden on their unused land for the purpose of growing food.

Davidson is the projects very first allotment caretaker. Group members helped him finish off his 100sqm plot last week and he planted out his first crops of okra, bush beans and sweet potatoes.  Mariejo managed to capture the beautiful second image of Davidson’s pure joy and shy pride.

A truly commendable initiative – well done.
