The Village Hub – Suurbraak

The Village Hub in Suurbraak, a small shop with a huge heart . . . .Suurbraak is a settlement in Overberg District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The village was established in 1812, when the London Missionary Society established a mission station to serve the Attaqua Khoikhoi. A ‘HUB’ of activity over weekends where the locals support each other and have a lot of fun and fellowship to boot.

Colette Marx – Village Hub founder

Suurbraak is a ‘love at first sight’ little village. I moved here from Cape Town about four years ago and came to love Suurbraak village deeply. The mountain has a soul healing effect and I somehow feel closer to the earth and more aware of the implications of daily choices on my health and overall wellbeing. A far cry from city life and bustle.

Paradise Organic Restaurant, is the central “hub” for the locals and with the support and encouragement of the owners, we set out to fill the entrance space with love and ethical products to encourage conscious living and share this magical place with visitors.

The Village Hub as it is now known is a shop with healthy snacks, grab and goes but always with a balance, because you have to have some naughty freshly baked or prepared sweet stuff. A little bit of sugar with a dash of coconut oil of course. The shop encourages local village folk to bring what they grow or showcase what they make. This allows for money going back into the community and creating a small platform for local craftsmen to sell their products.

I’ve only been open for a couple of months but the support from the local community has been amazing! Our little shop is growing each week, adding some products, taking others away, and seeing what works and what fits into the main idea and theme of The Village Hub.

I am increasingly confident about the future for The Village Hub and hopefully will attract new people that don’t necessarily come into Suurbraak for leisure.

Suurbraak is also called Zuurbraak and Xairu – a tiny village with 3 names! “Xairu” is the name given by the Attequa tribe who lived in the area before European settlement. “Xairu” means “beautiful” or “paradise” in the Xairu language. Suurbraak is considered one of the most beautiful towns in the Western Cape.
